Purim HerTorah
Women* + Power: From Purim Then to Purim Now
Featuring Rabba Wendy Amsellem, Zoe Fertik, Tali Farhadian Weinstein
Sponsored by Gender Equity In Hiring Project and jGirls+ Magazine
We’ve have always had to dance our way through the halls of power to make an impact. Join us as we explore the Purim megillah through a lens of “Women* + Power” – how we navigate power, how women*s power is perceived by others, how we perceive women* in power as women ourselves. Rabba Wendy Amsellem will unpack “Esther and the Liability of Women*s Likeability”, Zoe Fertik will explore “speaking truth to power” in the megillah, and Tali Farhadian Weinstein – former federal and state prosecutor and Iranian refugee – will reflect our learning while sharing her own experiences with power.
Come when you can; stay till you can’t. But, come.
Our learning is incomplete without you.
Join us Tuesday evening 2/28 @ 8:15-9:45pm EST
Please invite someone you think might want to be with us, too.
Finding Favor in Everyone’s Eyes: Esther and the Likeability Liability - Rabba Wendy Amsellem
The Book of Esther announces in Chapter 2:15 that “Esther found favor in the eyes of all who saw her.” Is this a positive assessment? What does it mean to be liked by everyone and what is the cost of pursuing this kind of popularity? We will do a close reading of Esther’s story and reflect on women’s power and how likeability can be both an asset and a constraint.
The Queen’s Speech - Zoe Fertik
What does the Megillah teach us about how women in power should most effectively use their voices? Looking at the text of the Megillah and the accompanying Midrash, we will explore Queen Esther's strategy for "speaking truth to power".
HerTorah gathers together a diverse community of Jewish women to connect over our shared heritage, explore our collective wisdom, and elevate our communal experience in learning with and from one another.
HerTorah is directed by Rabbanit Aliza Sperling, made possible in part by support of the Aviv Foundation and The Covenant Foundation and inspired by each one of us.
This gathering welcomes women* 12+ and learners of all backgrounds.
SVIVAH is dependent on the generosity of those who choose to invest in a powerful community of women. As always, cost should never be a barrier to anything SVIVAH, but if you can, please help us show respect to our speakers/facilitators for their time and expertise. www.svivah.org/donate
